The Arabian
Horse is one of the world's most beloved breeds. From the desert Kingdoms,
Europe to the United States... Arabian enthusiasts are found everywhere!
The earliest improved breed of horse, they are valued for their speed, stamina,
beauty, intelligence, and gentleness. The breed is said to have originated
from five mares given to Muhammad by his followers. But, of course they existed
before that time. Arabians have been used to better other breeds including
Lipizzans, contributing its qualities to most of the modern breeds.
Arabians have certain characteristics that set them apart from other
breeds:
-
Small dished face
-
Large, intelligent eyes
-
Sometimes less vertebrae in the back (23 instead of 24)
-
Average height about 15 hh
-
Average weight 800 - 1000 pounds
There are more characteristics
of the breed - and the lineages are varied. There are Polish bred, Desert
Bred, Egyptian, and others. The Arabian Horse Registry of America and its
predecessor organizations date from 1908. (Encyclopedia Brittanica,
Vol. 1, pg 509.1986)
