WHAT IS HYPP?

Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis:

This is a genetic disorder carried in the lineage of "Impressive" one particular Quarter Horse. There are many "Impressive" bred horses that DO NOT CARRY the disorder and are what is called HYPP N/N or Negative. They don't carry it and can NOT pass it on to offspring. Don't be fooled, some unscrupulous breeders are saying that having HYPP H/H or N/H is a GOOD thing, it is NOT! The only way this can be eliminated is by testing and NOT breeding stock carrying this gene.

If you would LOVE to have a horse with "Impressive" Blood lines, but don't know where to find one that is Negative and is safe to breed to, contact the AQHA for a list of breeders in your area. You can find an AQHA champion who is N/N (he can't pass on HYPP) and is 100% safe to breed to with NO CHANCE of the foal being HYPP positive or being a carrier (unless your mare has this gene!)

You can order by mail a lot of information for FREE from the American Quarter Horse Association. CLICK HERE to go to the AQHA web site!
