Day 1 - Dressage:
The first day consists of the horse and rider completing the menage in an
enclosed arena. The movements are complicated and designed to show the horse's
precision, smoothness, suppleness and obedience to the bit and rider's legs.
The horse and rider should appear to be performing in complete unison and
harmony with no resistance on teh horse's part.
Day 2 - Endurance/Cross-Country:
The endurance test proves the speed, endurance and jumping ability of the
horse. His training and conditioning really come into play here. It also
allows the rider to demonstrate her ability and knowledge in using the horse
correctly to maintain its soundness while still maintaining a fast pace.
The endurance test includes roads and tracks, steeplechase and cross country.
Each of the three phases of day two must be completed in a set time.
Day 3 - Show Jumping:
On day three horses undergo a veterinary check before they can compete. If
they pass they take part in the show jumping phase. A series of fences in
the show ring must be completed before the 3 day event is over. This final
part tests the stamina and recovery ability of the horse after the dressage
and cross country phases.
