Breeding Plan

We wish to outline our future breeding plan to better help you, the potential client, and any interested parties understand where our farm is headed in the future. To that end, let me first state our goal:

"The goal of Hunter's Pony Farm Sport and Performance Ponies is to produce a conformationally sound and attractive pony with outstanding athletic ability, a good mind, gentle spirit, and willingness to please. Each pony must be gentle and able to work as a partner with children, as safety is a priority."

How we plan on accomplishing this goal is a long, detailed process - one we have spent hours discussing and planning. Firstly, we need our produced foals to be conformationally sound, of a type that will excel as a dressage mount, hunter/jumper, and all around sport pony. We are modeling this type after the German Sport Pony, and striving for an 11 hand to 14.2 hand high pony that meets these criteria.

The very beginning of our dream was Buster, pictured above, a minimal Sabino Pinto. He is the Quarter Pony stallion we rescued in 1997. Buster is the sire of Tiger, Taurean Bei Socks, Misty and Pepsi. In 1999 he was gelded and sold as a sport pony to an East Coast concern. As time went on we acquired our mares, a couple of geldings, and continued with our plans.

Our foundation mare Bonnie, who is 1/2 Trakehner and 1/2 Irish TB out of Twice Bold (a grandson of Bold Ruler. Bold Ruler is the sire of the great Secretariat!). Her offspring will be produced by crossing her with a particular type of Welsh Pony, Section B or C, in order to produce the desired size and conformation. If an appropriate stud colt is produced, it will be retained as herd sire, registered as a Warmblood Pony and Sport Pony. If the color is one that allows registration, the pony, of any sex, will also be registered in the appropriate color registry. At this time we are seeking a Cremello stallion to breed to in the hopes we will have a palomino foal.

Any filly produced will likely be retained as breeding stock, although she will be trained and shown, too. The same registrations will be done for each filly.

Our Maximum Sabino Pinto mare, Cotton, will be retained in our herd to be bred to appropriate stallions in the hopes of producing loud color patterns. Her offspring will be offered for sale.

Valentine, who is a Sabino/Tobiano Pinto and always throws pinto foals, will be bred to a selected Arabian.

Additional mares will be acquired, evaluated and either retained in the herd or trained and sold.

As we progress in our plan, we keep our goals in mind, making wise breeding decisions, partnering our horses with mates that will refine the result and give us the desired outcome.

This is the German Riding Pony type we are striving for at Hunter's Pony Farm. As our herd develops you will see the creation of great sport ponies!

The sport pony is generally modeled after the German Riding Pony. These ponies are bred by crossing pony breeds like the Welsh with standard breeds like Arabians, Thoroughbreds, or Warmbloods. Morgans, Appaloosas and POAs also influence the group. American Sport Horses can be from 13.2 hands high to 14.2 hands high. (A hand is about 4 inches) Other sizes are available from 11.2 hands to 14.2, which is generally recognized as the height limit for a pony.
